Life & Death in a Celtic Village

The Durotriges Project, led by Dr Miles Russell of Bournemouth University, is absolutely key to learning more about the Durotriges Tribe – an Iron Age tribe that inhabited the South West of Britain. Evidence so far offers intriguing glimpses into a thriving, self-sustaining community, governed by women, with curious burial practices. And the team’s ongoing research on dozens of 2,000-year-old skeletons has huge potential to tell us more about life in general for Iron Age Britons.

The Story Unfolds

In 2010, Archaeologists from Bournemouth University began their investigations into this Iron Age settlement, since then they have uncovered over 120 human burials and a vast collection of complete and dismembered animal skeletons. I first came across their earliest finds while filming for the BBC's Digging for Britain. I'm delighted to have been granted access to their ongoing excavations as it's an unique opportunity to explore Iron Age life in Britain in incredible detail and depth. And the History Makers model gives me the flexibility to cover new discoveries and new theories as they emerge.

Take a deeper look at the story by exploring selected material generated throughout the research and development stages. You can already listen to Sarah's first extensive chat about the Durotriges and all things Iron Age with Dr Miles Russell.
